HEMATOLOGY
Hematologia
FMCSV’s hematology activities began in 1966 after the construction of the Maria Cecília Souto Vidigal Laboratory, the first in the country specialized in Leukemia. At the time, the scientific coordination of the Laboratory was led by Prof. Michel Abu Jamra, who was a Full Professor of Hematology and Hemotherapy at the Medical College of São Paulo University (FMUSP) and Head of the Hematology Service of the Central Institute of Hospital das Clínicas of the Medical College of São Paulo University (ICHC-HCFMUSP). Since then, the foundation has had close ties with the Hematology Service of ICHC-FMUSP and the Maria Cecília Souto Vidigal Leukemia Lab has become a benchmark in research and documentation in the sector.

The vast scientific progress made over the past decades, in Brazil and worldwide, regarding Leukemia diagnostics as well as treatment, has enabled FMCSV to reach further. Due to this new scenario, FMCSV decided in 2001 to review its mission and begin working with Leukemia and Hematology as a whole, in partnership with another research and treatment center.

In 2006, a partnership was established with the Hematology Service of ICHC-FMUSP, which received, as a loan, all of the Lab’s equipment and, as a donation, the entire book collection of the Library of the former FMCSV Leukemia Laboratory. It is worthwhile mentioning that the Library is one of the largest in the country in this sector.

In addition, FMCSV donated part of the funds required to adapt the Tumor Biology, Cytogenetics and Immunopathology laboratories and the amphitheater of the Hematology Service of ICHC-FMUSP.

After this change, FMCSV’s range of services in the hematology area increased, moving from simple Leukemia diagnostics to services aimed at several other diseases, such as Lymphoma, Myeloma, Bone Marrow Aplasia, Thrombosis, Hemophilia and Anemia.

In 2010, the partnership was expanded and renewed for another five years. This new stage of the project will include:
  • Acquisition of more equipment by FMCSV to be assigned to the Hematology Service of ICHC-FMUSP;
  • Renovation of the Coagulation and Hematology Labs;
  • Adaptation of the Walk-In Clinics for Transfusion, Chemotherapy and Antibiotics,  Hemostasis, Therapeutic Apheresis and Clinical Research;
  • Creation of a management model for hematology and hemotherapy that values the acquisition, systematization and dissemination of knowledge.
